Overview

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is an underground Roman Catholic Church built within the tunnels of a salt mine 200 meters underground in a mountain near the town of Zipaquirá. It is a very popular destination in the country. The name 'Salt Cathedral' was given mainly to attract tourists. The functioning church receives as many as 3,000 visitors on Sundays. It has no bishop; therefore, it has no official status as a cathedral in Catholicism.

Catedral de Sal de Zipaquira

The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá was named and considered the first wonder of Colombia due to its unique concept in architecture being found inside a salt mine. Every visitor is able to make a spiritual connection 180 meters underground. You'll also have the opportunity to admire the beautiful work which makes this place a very special event underneath the mountain of salt.

This attraction is found 45 minutes from Bogotá which you can easily get to by taxi.

With the basic admission ticket you'll be able to visit the Salt Theme Park, enjoy the light show, watch the 3-D movie, Nucuma, and be a part of the guided tour the cathedral offers.

The Plaza del Minero is a semicircle of 50 radius that is surrounded by 40 Palmas de Cera (wax palm trees), which represent the years that the Old Cathedral was open. These Wax Palms Trees are considered the National Tree of our country.

From Plaza del Minero you can see 2 great works: the first one is carved in stone that shows the indigenous people doing mining works, and the second one is the Monument to the Miner made of steel by the master Alfredo Arújo Santoyo. The Plaza will take you to the entrance tunnel of our First Wonder of Colombia Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá.
